Maurice Shockley Memorial Acoustic Stringed Instrument Scholarship Fund

Maurice Shockley

Maurice Shockley, a friend of Delaware Friends of Folk, departed this earth in 2008 at age 79. Maurice was frequently seen at our pick-ins and performed at the very first "Fall Fling", later renamed the "Delmarva Folk Festival". A virtual encyclopedia of old-time music, Maurice was also a staple at the Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association's monthly events as a longtime member of the "Kitchen Pickers". Maurice's family's desire is to honor his life through a scholarship to help those who would like to learn guitar or another stringed instrument, but might be able to afford lessons.
Delaware residents 16 years of age or older who are interested in private lessons to improve their acoustic stringed instrument skills can receive a music scholarship through the Delaware Friends of Folk, awarded by the Board of Delaware Friends of Folk. Delaware Friends of Folk will award one scholarship per year and will reimburse 50% of lesson costs not to exceed $250 in a calendar year from an approved instructor. Lessons must be for acoustic stringed instruments. This scholarship is good for up to one year from the award date. Deadline for submission is October 15.
